Middle school activity
Nickelodeon produced and funded short video clips for the National Down Syndrome Society entitled "Everyone Counts." The theme of the videos is “We're all different... that's what makes us the same.” The videos do an excellent job of celebrating differences in all students.
For an activity that would honour diversity, a teacher could show the above video clip which could lead to a discussion about how each student is different. Then, the students could work together in groups to create their own short videos that highlight and celebrate the differences that each of them have. By working together to create the video, students would appreciate what makes each student special rather than focusing on how a student may be different because of an exceptionality they may have.
Once all the videos have been completed the class could enjoy a “Movie Day” and watch all of the different videos together. The students would enjoy seeing themselves on the “big screen” and would learn to appreciate their classmates for being unique individuals.
